Who We Are
Child bedlessness is a national problem, and as a national nonprofit with chapters spread across the country, SHP has provided the solution. We are a volunteer organization that builds beds for kids who are sleeping on the floor. There are multiple ways to get involved right here in MD-Montgomery Co. Check out our main website and Facebook page listed under links for more information.
What Volunteers Do
At SHP Montgomery County, we work with many groups, including student groups, such as the Boy Scouts, to achieve our goal of providing beds for as many children as we can so that they are no longer sleeping on the floor. Volunteer opportunities can be broken down into three main categories of opportunities: fundraising, building, and delivering, and assembling of the beds. Our SHP chapter is constantly looking for ways to fundraise, which includes receiving money donations to buy supplies, or direct receipt of the supplies (such as pillows, blankets, and mattresses). The more funds that we raise, the more that we can give back to those in need! Second, we need volunteers, including student volunteers, that would participate in our build-days. During these builds, we love to gather families and friends to work together as a team to produce as many beds as we can. Builds usually last a day and provide a warm-hearted experience to all. Finally, we rely on volunteers to deliver and assemble beds on-site at the house/apartment where the beds are to be delivered. We find this to be the most rewarding experience as it allows one to visualize just how much these beds mean to the children receiving the beds. Although only a multi-hour process, the experience is without a doubt worth it.
