VALUES

Girls’ Night Out by Shawn Yancy Inc. is committed to helping empower, nurture and serve economically vulnerable women and children with compassion, care, dignity and respect.

OUR HISTORY

Washington DC News anchor, Shawn Yancy started her Girls' Night Out events in 2010 as a way to help charities that promote the wellbeing of women & children.

"The very first Girls' Night Out happened in my dining room with a handful of my girlfriends. I came up with the idea of swapping the clothing we no longer wanted or could no longer fit, and whatever was left over, would be donated to charity. The first year, we donated the clothes to a Liberian village. The second year, we donated the clothes to Dress For Success DC. Over the years we donated thousands of dollars and thousands of women’s professional and casual clothing items and accessories to multiple charities across the Washington, DC region. I knew we were doing good in our community, but I also knew we could be doing so much more.” - Shawn Yancy, G.N.O. Founder

In 2019, Girls’ Night Out by Shawn Yancy Inc. became a registered non-profit organization known as the Giving Foundation for Women and Children Inc. Our mission to empower the lives and transform the futures of underserved women and children stayed the same; but now we have the tools to execute our new goals to grow our outreach, provide support, expand our key programs and our commitment to the hundreds of women and children we serve each year.

What Volunteers Do

OUR PROGRAMS

The GNO LoveSac Project

The program provides a sealable canvas bag filled with the care and wellness essentials a woman or child living in a shelter needs including: toothbrush, toothpaste, lip balm, soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, lotion, feminine hygiene products etc. The LoveSacs are for women and children who are living in domestic violence or homeless shelters without their basic needs. Our goal is to help families create stability and provide them with the dignity that everyone deserves.

The Books & Backpacks Initiative

The program provides a backpack, school supplies and books to students affected by poverty. The supplies are given to students who attend Title I elementary schools to help promote and enhance youth literacy and support academic achievement. Each year, GNO-GFWC provides more than 300 backpacks filled with school supplies and books to children in the Washington, DC community. Our goal is to help children thrive and succeed through education.

The Holiday Hearts Initiative

The program provides new toys and gifts to the children of economically insecure families. To date, GNO-GFWC has provided thousands of new toys and books as Christmas gifts to area families. Our goal is to ensure no child in the Washington, DC region wakes up without a gift on Christmas morning. We want to help parents make that dream a reality.

The Caring Coats Project

The program provides new winter coats, hats and gloves to area children in need. Each year, GNO-GFWC provides hundreds of new coats to children who might otherwise go without. We believe every child deserves his or her own new winter coat. We provide items from size newborn through size 18 for children living in the Washington, DC region.
