Community FarmShare

Who We Are

Community FarmShare is building a connected, thriving local food system by increasing equitable access to nutritious local foods, supporting farm business sustainability, and improving the health of our local communities.

We partner with community health clinics and MCPS Community Schools to link individuals with diet-related chronic disease ("Food is Medicine" program) and families experiencing food insecurity ("Farm to School" program) with locally grown, nutrient-dense fresh fruits and vegetables. We operate 9 Mobile Farm Markets in high-need, high-traffic neighborhoods across Montgomery County; we also deliver weekly produce bags to program participants who can't make it to market.

For other food assistance providers looking to purchase local fresh produce, we provide wholesale service to coordinate procurement, packing, cold storage, and delivery from our local farm partners.

What Volunteers Do

Produce Bag Delivery Drivers

We're looking for volunteer drivers to pick up produce bags at our FarmShare aggregation hub (220 Girard St, Gaithersburg) and deliver the bags to 6-8 families in a neighborhood community, from June to November. Each volunteer's route is the same each week, which offers volunteers the opportunity to build a sense of community with the families and the farmers. We do our best to match volunteers to nearby communities where you live in order to minimize the carbon footprint and to make the best use of your time.

This volunteer position is great for those people that like to have something on the calendar on a consistent basis. We understand that things do come up, kids get sick, and we all need time for summer vacation! For these reasons, each route will also have a pool of back-up drivers so volunteers can have some flexibility as needed.

Mobile Farm Market Volunteers

We are looking for volunteers to help with our Mobile FARMacy Markets! Community FarmShare runs mobile FARMacy markets at 9 different locations throughout Montgomery County from June to November. You can see a complete list of our market locations and dates here.

Volunteers are needed to help our CFS staff set up and close down the market, restock the tables, hand out info/resources and generally be a welcoming, supportive, engaging team member to provide a positive experience in the community. Working at the mobile market offers a unique experience for volunteers to be able to interact and connect with the participants of our programs.

Farm-Fresh Produce Bag Packers

We're looking for volunteers to help pack bags of fresh produce for families in our community nutrition programs.

We pack produce for our two programs - "Food Is Medicine", supporting low-income residents managing their diet-related chronic disease through healthy food access, and our "Farm to School program", supporting families experiencing nutrition insecurity in MCPS schools.

Produce is packed at our FarmShare aggregation hub (220 Girard St, Gaithersburg) every Wednesday from 11am-5pm in shifts of 2 hours, from June to early November.

We'd love to have volunteers sign up for multiple weeks at a time -- it's nice to connect with the team (6-8 volunteers each week) and helps us be more efficient too :)
