ArtStream teaches acting techniques and communication skills in inclusive classes designed for people of all ages with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) — including autism. Previous acting experience is not required to take a class or workshop. Classes build skills that are applicable in all aspects of life: from the stage, to the family dinner table, to Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings and the workplace. Class subjects may include comedy, music theatre, improv, public speaking, role-play, party dancing, and social skills.
Participants function in groups of up to 30 people with 1:4 staffing; independently meet self-care needs; follow directions; and demonstrate respectful, safe behavior at all times.
Registration for ArtStream classes and performing companies are open to adults 18+.
What Volunteers Do
Volunteers mentor adults with cognitive disabilities in classes that allow them to fully experience Theatre Arts. Volunteers work behind the scenes and onstage in our theatre shows. They also mentor in classrooms such as Improv, Comedy and more! Volunteers organize the costume closet annually and help get the Black Box Theatre in Silver Spring ready for the Theatre Season. They work in the lobby of our shows, helping with concessions and programs during our show weekends.
