Who We Are
Chesapeake Animal Rescue Mission (CHARM) is a Maryland-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to saving animals in need. Formerly known as the Animal Welfare Society of Howard County (AWSHC), we rebranded in 2025 to reflect our expanded mission and long-term vision. At CHARM Rescue, our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and find forever homes for animals in need. Founded in 1944 and officially recognized as a nonprofit in 1951, our organization has spent decades rescuing, rehabilitating, and advocating for animals. Now we continue this legacy by providing adoption services, training and behavioral support, and accessible veterinary care, including low-cost vaccines and spay/neuter programs.
What Volunteers Do
CHARM is a 100% volunteer-supported organization! Our volunteers provide support across a variety of important areas for the rescue, from marketing and social media support, to being foster families for adoptable pets, to staffing our adoption and fundraising events. We are also in the process of a rebuild of CHARM's shelter facilities with lots of opportunities for projects there, as well.
Students (age 16+) can volunteer for several of our activities with the approval and support of their parent or guardian. Adults (age 18+) are invited to complete a volunteer application at the CHARM website.
