The Melese Duressa Institute, a nonprofit organization, empowers communities through collaborative solutions that break the cycle of poverty and build healthy, thriving societies. Vision To inspire, empower, and connect people to build bold, lasting solutions that end poverty and transform lives. Mission To ignite a global movement that builds healthy, thriving societies through innovative and collaborative action. What We Do 1. Poverty Eradication & Community Empowerment 1) Designs and implements community-driven programs that tackle the root causes of poverty. 2) Equips vulnerable groups — youth, women, professionals, and entrepreneurs — with the tools, resources, and networks they need to thrive. 2. Capacity Building & Education 1) Delivers entrepreneurship training, mentorship, and coaching to help individuals launch and scale sustainable businesses. 2) Offers professional development programs that build 21st-century skills for a competitive workforce. 3) Promotes diaspora knowledge exchange, connecting global expertise with local talent. 3. Collaborative Solutions & Partnerships 1) Engages with government, private sector, nonprofits, and global partners to remove systemic barriers such as red tape, information gaps, and limited resources. 2) Co-creates joint initiatives for job creation, investment, and sustainable development. 3) Strengthens diaspora–local linkages for funding, mentorship, and market opportunities. 4. Health, Well-Being & Social Impact 1) Advances healthy, thriving societies through health awareness campaigns, volunteer networks, and community services. 2) Mobilizes healthcare professionals to volunteer, share expertise, and expand access to quality care. 5. Innovation & Entrepreneurship Ecosystem 1) Establishes and scales initiatives such as “Thousand Millionaire” hubs to nurture startups and foster entrepreneurship. 2) Develops digital platforms and resources that empower youth and communities. 3) Champions innovative, tech-enabled solutions for education, health, tourism, and social enterprise.

What Volunteers Do

Volunteers are the heartbeat of the Melese Duressa Institute (MDI). They bring expertise, energy, and passion that power our mission. Volunteers contribute across eight interconnected areas of impact: 1. Poverty Eradication & Community Empowerment • Mentor youth, women, and aspiring entrepreneurs by sharing practical skills and real-world experience. • Support community outreach to identify needs and co-design solutions with local groups. • Connect underserved communities with resources, networks, and opportunities to break the cycle of poverty. 2. Capacity Building & Education • Deliver training workshops and webinars in entrepreneurship, leadership, ICT, and professional skills. • Provide mentorship and coaching to help individuals launch and scale sustainable businesses. • Contribute to curriculum development, resource creation, and knowledge transfer between diaspora and local talent. • Assist in developing and maintaining MDI’s Learning Management System (LMS) and digital education platforms. 3. Collaborative Solutions & Partnerships • Build bridges between local communities and global partners by sharing expertise and networks. • Support the recruitment of new volunteers, supporters, and donors to expand MDI’s impact. • Participate in proposal writing, advocacy campaigns, and joint initiatives with government, private sector, and nonprofits. • Serve as ambassadors to strengthen diaspora–local linkages and partnerships. 4. Health, Well-Being & Social Impact • Volunteer medical and health expertise through community clinics, awareness campaigns, and telehealth sessions. • Mobilize and coordinate healthcare volunteers to expand access to quality care. • Promote health and wellness initiatives that strengthen thriving societies. 5. Innovation, Events & Entrepreneurship Ecosystem • Mentor startups through business incubation, product design, and market entry strategies. • Contribute technical skills in website development, digital tools, AI, and ICT solutions for MDI platforms. • Organize and lead events such as community meetings, networking sessions, and fundraising activities. • Support fundraising efforts by coordinating donor events, campaigns, and meetings with supporters. • Help design and pilot innovative projects, hackathons, or competitions that empower youth and entrepreneurs. 6. Communication & Advocacy • Share MDI’s story by writing impact reports, creating media content, and documenting success stories. • Manage outreach channels such as social media, newsletters, and digital campaigns. • Provide translation and localization to ensure accessibility across languages and diaspora communities. • Advocate for poverty eradication, diaspora engagement, and inclusive development at local, national, and global forums. 7. Monitoring, Evaluation & Research (MER) • Assist in data collection, surveys, and reporting to measure MDI’s impact. • Conduct research studies on entrepreneurship, poverty reduction, and social innovation. • Provide evidence and insights that strengthen donor trust and support continuous improvement. 8. Administration & Organizational Support • Contribute to grant writing, donor reports, and proposal development. • Support recruitment and engagement drives for volunteers, members, and diaspora partners. • Assist with scheduling, logistics, contact databases, and overall organizational operations.
