Who We Are
We are an all-volunteer organization the mentors teen-aged boys, and girls primarily in school programs.
What Volunteers Do
Boys to Men of Greater Washington provides a safe space for teen-aged boys and teen-aged girls to talk about what is really going on in their lives, get support and support others. Boys and girls being mentored come from a variety of backgrounds. The work we do is transformational. And we have fun. For more information about the teens themselves go to our website, www.boystomengw.org, the national website, www.boystomenusa.org and email sylvester.hodge@boystomengw.org for more information. We conduct circle-based programs during times coordinated with each school. Meetings are to listen to and encourage boys and girls in areas important to them. We have meetings options at the Greenbelt Youth Center, 99 Centerway, Greenbelt, Md. We offer a transformational "Rites of Passage Adventure" weekend. We are not affiliated with any religious or political organizations. Our boys and girls have gone from "at risk" to full scholarship at good colleges and universities.
All mentors must fill out a one-page background check which is then vetted for any predatory offenses. When it is offered, mentors are encouraged to take a one day "Reclaiming you Teenage Fire" training which takes mentors back to their teen-aged years to better understand the teens they are mentoring and to ensure mentors do not project their issues onto teens. Boys to Men provides support to mentors as well as teens, with our focus is on the teens.
We support the Department of Energy's (DOE) summer program with a weekly mentoring circle at various locations in the Washington DC area. We offer adventure trips such as white-water rafting, baseball games, visits to museums and opportunities within the Washington DC area.
