St. John's is a Lutheran (ELCA) congregation in Aspen Hill, Rockville, MD. In addition to worship and Christian Education and a Preschool, the church has a larger community involvement.
Outside volunteers can participate in our food ministry, Nurture Our Neighbor. Each month, on the third Sunday, we provide food to households in who come to our distribution at the church.
Volunteer opportunities include:
- gathering donated food
- packing bags
- picking up recaptured food from organizations in our community
- shelving food
- setting up tables and organize food for personal shopping distribution
- Handing out food the 3rd Sunday of the month
- Welcoming guests into a line and assist with their check-in
- Clean up after distribution especially preparing boxes for recycling
For certain distributions, we gather other non-food items appreciated by our community in need such as child and adult diapers, feminine products, hats and gloves. These items provide volunteers opportunities to gather, pack, label and distribute.
For many of these jobs, the ability to do repetitive lifting of 25-50 pounds is helpful. We can accommodate 6-8 volunteers at a time and ask that those 14 and under be accompanied by a parent.
St. John's serves meals at a homeless shelter, collects school supplies for children in need, supports Christmas outreach programs, makes knitted and crocheted items for hospitals and others in need, and sews quilts for those affected by U.S disasters and those in need overseas. We are active within the ELCA in "God's work. Our hands.", supporting those in need here within the community and worldwide. We are a meeting place for six (6) 12 Step program meetings weekly as well as making space available to other community groups on a case by case basis.
