Who We Are

Team River Runner is a 501-c3 non-profit organization founded at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 2004 and offers adaptive paddling programs to wounded, ill, and injured veterans. The mission is to provide an opportunity to find health, healing community purpose and new challenges through adaptive paddle sports.  We are a volunteer-run organization and have opportunities for engagement on the water, at the riverside, face-to-face, or at a desk.  We need YOU!

What Volunteers Do

Team River Runner teaches kayaking to military veterans on the Potomac River from April through October every year.  We host weekly programs at the Lock 6/Feeder Canal in Bethesda and at Riley's Lock near Poolesville.  Volunteer tasks include:

  • Greet/sign-in our members at paddling events
  • Distribute kayaks & gear; help get paddlers fitted into kayaks; stow kayaks & gear after events
  • Adapt kayaks for paddlers with physical disabilities - we will train you
  • Guide and instruct on the river (if qualified by experience/training)
  • Drive the shuttle van and tow the 14-foot kayak trailer
  • Repair & maintain kayaks
  • Administrative duties like data entry
  • Veteran outreach in the community and on social media
  • Photography - outdoor and action
  • Special event support - DC Biathlon, National Kayak Football Tournament
