Who We Are
Vikara Village uses the communal spirit of mind-body practices, like movement and the arts, to empower individuals to reach their full potential.
Our vision is to build more resilient citizens.
To us, this means youth graduate from high school, go on to enroll in college or a skilled trade and have lasting connections with trusted adults. We want everyone to have stable and healthy home lives and be valuable members of their community.
What Volunteers Do
We help people develop a healthy:
-
Sense of Self
-
Sense of Community
-
Sense of Belonging
Our Programs:
Safe Space Yoga
Safe Space Yoga provides specially trained yoga teachers to work with individuals who have histories of poverty, being unhoused, trauma, and addiction, to offer yoga and movement as a valuable tool in their healing. Yoga has been found to be a valuable tool in the healing process. Evidence shows that yoga helps with overall well-being, depression, and anxiety.
Bold Heart Yoga
Body Love Yoga empowers young women to understand and trust their bodies and learn how to listen to their hearts. Our afterschool program for middle and high school young women (grades 6-12) builds a healthy sense of self, community, and belonging through yoga and art.
Expressive arts, journaling, guided discussion, breathing exercises and meditation techniques are used to support this work and empower young women with tools they can use during everyday situations at school, with family members and with friends.
