Small Things Matter is a volunteer-led (501(3)c nonprofit EIN 82-3271146) founded on the idea that small acts of kindness can make a big impact on someone’s life. Our mission is to educate our youth and encourage their altruism, engage our community in charitable giving, help our members develop their leadership skills, and perpetuate kindness in our world through our 3 programs: Kokua Foods, Books for Bedtime, and Crafting for Charity.
Our Kokua Foods Distribution Program provides over 2000 families in Montgomery and PG County with fresh produce, meat, dairy, and bakery items 2-4x each month through partnerships with Wegmans, Imperfect Foods, Trader Joe's, City of Takoma Park, KOL Foods, Silver Spring Cares, TPSS Co-op, TP SDA Church, and Montgomery County. We have also established food pantries at Montgomery Blair High School in partnership with the Blair HS Difference Makers and plan to establish a pantry at Wheaton Woods Elementary School, a Title I school in the future.
Books for Bedtime, our literacy program, provides brand new books to underserved children in the DC Metro area. Our middle and high school members read books aloud to children at our monthly Kokua Foods distributions and engage them in reading and writing while they wait for their parents to shop for groceries. We also do school-wide distributions of brand new books at Title I elementary schools including Rolling Terrace ES and used books at regular elementary schools including Takoma Park ES and Piney Branch ES. Our reading and writing program at TPES and PBES in its second year of implementation.
In addition, Small Things Matter also encourages youth to use their talents to help those in need. We believe that altruism can be nurtured by providing opportunities to our youth to serve. We provide opportunities for children to craft items to support various charities and hospitals, host charity parties where handcrafted items created at the party are donated to charity, and design custom buttons for non-profits, rock bands, and schools to help them share their message with the community.
Join us and we can work together to make the world a better place.
Thanks!
