Who We Are
The purpose of the Army Distaff Foundation is to provide housing, food and healthcare assistance to all veterans and members of their family in need regardless of their ability to pay. When Dwight D. Eisenhower was inaugurated as the 34th President of the United States in 1953, Mamie did not forget her challenges as a military wife and mother. She recognized the financial hardships that many military widows faced, receiving only minimal government benefits after the passing of their spouse, and was determined to make a difference. Mamie worked on behalf of The Army Distaff Foundation, founded in 1959 by Mrs. Lydia Taylor and Mrs. Rosamond Davis, and was instrumental in enlisting support from Army wives throughout the world. By 1960, she was named honorary chairman of The Army Distaff Foundation’s Women’s Advisory Committee and personally attended the groundbreaking ceremony of The Foundation’s Army Distaff Hall, later to be renamed Knollwood, in Washington, D.C.
