Who We Are

Enriching the lives of our patients and their loved ones is our primary goal at Heartland Hospice. To achieve this mission, we seek the compassionate assistance of volunteers and invite them to join us on the journey of a lifetime. Because they are the heart of our organization, we welcome volunteers with various skills, talents and availability to become a special part of our Heartland Family!!

What Volunteers Do

As Heartland Volunteers, there are countless opportunities to serve in the following areas:

Friendly Visitor/Companions, who provide emotional/spiritual support to patients and families on the hospice journey, including companionship and socialization, reading (literature, magazines, mail), music enrichment, arts & crafts, grief support, relief for caregivers, running errands and legacy projects.  Patients reside in houses, apartments and care facilities throughout Montgomery & Prince Georges' Counties.

Bereavement Volunteers, whose outreach to caregivers and family members focuses on active listening and specialized support after they have experienced the loss of their loved one through death. Phone calls, visits and participation in community healing events are some of the grief-oriented activities that bereavement volunteers are involved with on an ongoing basis.

Vigil Volunteers, who are called to offer a compassionate, loving presence to hospice patients who are actively dying, so that they do not die alone.

Veteran-to-Veteran Volunteers, who are U.S. military Veterans, contribute their shared experience and mutual understanding while visiting hospice patients who are also Veterans.  Vet-to-Vet Volunteers serve as friendly visitors, sit vigil with dying patients and assist with veteran recognition ceremonies, which celebrate the sacrifice and service of our Veteran hospice patients.

Administrative Volunteers, who offer practical and creative assistance with clerical projects and organizational tasks within our administrative office in Beltsville.
