Who We Are

The Washington Center for International Education (WCIE)’s mission is to connect people and resources in Washington, D.C.’s distinctive international community, to the local community and to the needs of refugees.

WCIE organizes education, community service, and student service learning programs. We believe that at this unique moment we need to come together to address issues like the global migration and refugee crisisracism, and conservation and the environment.

The Washington, D.C. area offers us unique resources. Building on these resources, we bring people together through community serviceserve recently-resettled refugees, and explore diplomacy. We love meeting people through one of our twice-annual Community Service Weeks, then we hope you’ll engage in our programs more and more deeply over time.

What Volunteers Do

WCIE organizes small groups of adults and students that engage in community service activities in and around Washington, D.C. Our programs have purpose, and groups of students are small, to ensure that the community service experience is a good one. In addition, we welcome all students but focus particularly on international students to help them better understand, appreciate, and benefit from their community service. Some student participants may be ESOL students that may require careful explanation of the activity at hand. Other students may have stronger English language proficiency, but may still benefit from an explanation of the cultural context of their service.

Our goal is to connect the Washington, D.C. area international community to the local community--and in so doing to build a better shared life together.

WCIE partners with and holds volunteer orientations at English Now!, a private English language school in downtown Bethesda.

If you are would like to join us for a volunteer opportunity, please make sure to include your email and CELLPHONE NUMBER. If you are a student, please also include your school and grade level.
