Who We Are

We advance educational equity by building long-term partnerships with students, families, communities, and schools to create experiences outside of school that inspire the joy of learning. Horizons Greater Washington is an academic and enrichment program designed to help students who are eligible for free- and reduced-meals in DC and Maryland experience success in and outside the classroom. Horizons Greater Washington supports over 370 students from 1st grade through 9th grade with year-round programming and support.

The hallmark of our organization is our six-week summer program that begins when a student enters 1st grade and extends until they enter 9th grade for a rewarding long-term relationship between a diverse set of learners and the nurturing staff who work with them every summer.

What Volunteers Do

Horizons Greater Washington is an academic and enrichment program designed to help students from low-income families in DC and Maryland reach their full potential. Horizons Greater Washington supports over 370 students from 1st grade through 9th grade with year-round programming and support.

Students seeking SSL hours and an opportunity to work with kids may find our Volunteer Classroom Assistant opportunities to be of interest. Volunteer Classroom Assistants work with the Site Director, Program Director, and teachers to develop and nurture a safe, respectful, challenging, and inclusive learning environment in which students have a strong sense of belonging and safety. Volunteers assist the Lead Teacher in the classroom duties of the teaching of 15-17 students during Horizons’ six week summer enrichment program at Horizons Greater Washington as well as activities such as, but not limited to, the following:

  • Attend a one-day orientation session prior to the start of the program
  • Help students during recess, lunchtime, arrival, dismissal, and field trips
  • Greet students and their family members before/after school and at special events throughout the six-week program
  • Maintain classroom spaces, prepare materials for lessons, and conduct student observations, as instructed by the Lead Teacher
  • Work with small or large groups of students in all subjects
  • Read aloud to students
