Small Things Matter's Crafting for Charity Program helps those in need with handmade items.  

We are looking for volunteers to help us decorate cloth reusuable masks to share with the those in need in our community.  Mask wearing. social distancing, and handwashing are all ways that we can help stop the spread of the coronavirus.  We would love to have individuals and groups helping us decorate masks for adults and children.

Middle school and high school students are eligible to earn SSL hours by decorating cloth masks. 

5 decorated cloth masks = 1 SSL hour of service.

Instructions: 

-Please document your mask decorating by taking an action shot photo of them being made and a group shot of the finished maske once you've finished decorating them

-Purchase adult cotton masks (Amazon has these: https://www.amazon.com/Gildan-Reusable-Everyday-2-layer-Cotton/dp/B088YYYWKG/)

-Decorate masks either by using tie-dye, stencils with permanent markers, or draw nice designs.  (You can find these on Amazon, Michaels, Jo-Anns)

-Write down the number and items made, and have your parent initial it, and submit these photos, etc via this google form:

In order to receive SSL credit, you must submit both a photo of masks you decorated and your log of the amounts of the items.  Please submit your work via the form only once.  I will be sending out emails with your SSL form each weekend.  Please be patient.  

DROPOFF

Completed masks can be dropped off on any day (Monday-Sunday) at Small Things Matter, 14516 Bauer Drive, Rockville, MD 20853 from 6am-6pm.  Please leave your items on our carport.  Masks can also be dropped off at the TP Seventh Day Adventist Church Center (6810 Eastern Ave NW, Washington, DC 20012) on Friday, May 7 =AND= Friday, May 21, from 9am-10am.  Please drive around to the parking lot entrance on 2nd Street NW.  Please note: You cannot bring your donations to the SDA Church any other day or time than stated above.  It is a distribution site, not our office.   

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: 

  • Do I need to sign up?  There is no need to sign up.  Just start as soon as you like.
  • Is there a limit to how many I make?  No limit. 
  • Is this approved for MCPS SSL hours - YES
  • Are these items still needed?  PLEASE NOTE: This opportunity ends on June 1, 2021.  All masks must be received by then for credit.
  • How will I receive my SSL hours?  You will receive your SSL form via email once your service is complete and you have submitted your log and photos via the Google form.
  • We are helping over 1000 families in Montgomery County by providing food assistance and are very busy so and trying to limit emails about this opportunity. Thanks for understanding!!!

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety and privacy at any time the student is interacting with the nonprofit and its clients. The nonprofit organization will determine the number of SSL hours awarded based on the evidence submitted. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns. This service activity is designed to be completed within the safety of the student’s home until schools resume normal status.
