Maryland Emancipation Day with the Sandy Spring Slave Museum & African Art Gallery

November 1, 2025 - 11am-4pm

Emancipation Day in Maryland is celebrated annually on Nov. 1 to commemorate Nov. 1, 1864, the date Maryland abolished slavery in its constitution through an amendment that was voted on by the public. Maryland was the first state to end slavery by a popular vote.

MCPS encourages students and families to visit the Emancipation Day celebration at the Sandy Spring Slave Museum & African Art Gallery on November 1, 2025, from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Any MCPS student in grades 6-12 can earn Student Service Learning (SSL) hours for attending and participating in advocacy action. See the MCPS table at the site for the SSL form.
