Description

Who we are: Founded in 1963, the Literacy Council of Montgomery County, Maryland is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to helping adults in Montgomery County learn to read, write and/or speak English.

Over 700 adults seek out a tutor to provide them with individualized instruction and mentoring through gaining up to a 5th grade level of reading and writing and/or English language proficiency.

What We Do: We train volunteers to tutor one-on-one or with small groups of adult learners who live or work in Montgomery County. ESL students are learning to master English language proficiency, which may include any combination of speaking, listening comprehension, reading, and/or writing. Basic Literacy students are adults who are native and/or fluent English speakers, but may have had difficulties learning to read and write during grade school and/or in traditional learning environments and need more personalized instruction to move at their own pace.

Tutor Role:

LCMC’s English as a Second Language (ESL) and Basic Literacy (BL) tutoring programs are among the largest in Montgomery County, serving 2,000+ adult learners each year.

The BASIC LITERACY TUTORING PROGRAM works with adults who speak and understand English but are reading and writing below a fourth grade level.

The ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ESL) TUTORING PROGRAM works with adults who speak English at a low level; it teaches reading, writing, listening comprehension, and speaking.

Tutoring is carried out by trained volunteers who meet with one or more students at locations throughout Montgomery County, for 2 hours each week. Tutoring is an effective way to serve learners who …

  • have limited schedule flexibility

  • may have difficulty keeping up in a group classroom setting

  • have not attended school before

  • who need privacy or confidentiality

  • who simply need to learn at their own pace

You are not required to speak a second language.
