The Montgomery County Language Bank, a program with the Office of Community Partnerships, is actively recruiting for volunteer Interpreters and Translators to work with County agencies and nonprofit organizations. The Language Bank is an organized list of volunteers who are 21 or older and speak and write English fluently and are native speakers of or fluent in other language(s). According to the 2013 American Community Survey 1 in 7 of residents are considered limited English proficient (LEP)?meaning they speak English less than "very well". However, this percentage is much higher in language subgroups: 44% of Spanish speakers are LEP, 56% of Korean residents and 59% of Vietnamese residents are LEP. Therefore, many Montgomery County residents have limited knowledge of the English language and it is a struggle to access necessary services and obtain information on programs in the County. Volunteers MUST be willing to attend orientation and be on call by Montgomery County agencies, schools and non-profit organizations that need help with verbal interpretation and/or written translation. All opportunities are short-term and the tasks vary depending on the agency. Working from the comfort of your home is a possibility for some opportunities. All fluent multilingual adults, with languages including American Sign Language, are encouraged to apply to the Language Bank. Orientations for the Language Bank are being held for interested volunteers. For more information please contact the Language Bank at 240-773-2560 or languagebank@montgomerycountymd.gov.
