ATTENTION students fascinated by history, sociology, community development, human experiences, information management and processing and similar subjects!
Garrett Park is an 125-year-old community which is on the National Register of Historic Places, incorporates a Montgomery County historic district, is the world’s first Nuclear Free Zone, and is considered one of the best place in the Washington area to live. We are reorganizing and modernizing our archives, and need help.
Working in our archives, you can come in contact nearly first hand with a host of famous, important and sometimes quirky residents and former residents: The person who designed the United Nations flag and logo, the inventor of the IBM punch card that is the forerunner of nearly all computer technology, and the author of the famous children’s book “Ferdinand the Bull.” At the same time you will become immersed in what the New York Times called the “Left Bank of the Suburbs, finding out why indoor toilets may still be illegal in town, who committed the town’s only murder, and how we got our own railroad station.
We need bright, energetic and curious students to help in the following areas: Sorting and filing historic records and memorabilia, transcribing oral histories, scanning photographs, entering and managing data on our PastPerfect computer program, helping with exhibits and special presentations and, as needed, helping others use our archives. Historic walks around town are thrown in free.
