The Button Farm Living History Center interprets plantation life in Maryland the heroic story of the Underground Railroad. Patrons are encouraged to explore our 40-acre farm and the surrounding 6,000-acre State Park, where you can expect to see wildlife, historical landscapes and have a wonderful, self-guided outdoor experience.

Button Farm will be open to the public from Noon to 3pm most Saturdays from May through October. Access to Button Farm will include:

  • Onsite Parking
  • Self-guided tours of our living history center, including Museum Garden, Animal Pens and displays.
  • Miles of hiking and mountain bike trails just off of our front drive.
  • Picnic tables, benches and shaded areas to sit down or enjoy a picnic at (patrons must bring their own food and non-alcoholic drink and take trash with them).
  • Beautiful landscapes and vista for photography, drawing, painting and bird-watching.

How Volunteers Can Help:

We will be asking volunteers to help with set-up and break-down as well as general operations.  Volunteer hours will be from 10 to Noon (most days).

Volunteer tasks will include:

  • Help with set-up and break-down of event
  • Direct cars to parking spaces
  • Help out as needed (i.e., provide directions, ensure signs are up, etc.)

Volunteers must be 16 and older to work solo, 14 and older if accompanied by an adult. Volunteers should wear comfortable outdoor clothing including closed-toe shoes. Volunteer must bring their own water, lunch, snacks.

Protocols for COVID-19:

Your health, and the well-being of our staff and site partners, is of the utmost concern to us.  We will be limiting the number of people on the farm through a reservation only visitor system. 

To keep everyone safe, volunteers and visitors to Button Farm will be required to follow these rules:

Masks must be worn when in close contact with other groups and staff (volunteers please bring your own masks)
Maintain safe social distancing (six feet or more) from other groups and staff
Use the hand sanitizer and disinfectants provided

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns.
