Help us maintain an orchard of chestnut trees near Ellicot City, MD at 9:30 am on Saturday 5 November. The goal will be to remove deadwood and weaker trees to open space for the strongest trees. As part of the American Chestnut Foundation's larger program to restore a native tree to our region's environment by selectively crossing the most survivable trees, our orchards include trees with varying resistance to an invasive blight. Some trees don't make it -- clearing them out creates more space for remaining trees to thrive and new generations to be planted.
The orchard, our CMREC seed orchard, is located at 4240 Folly Quarter Rd., Ellicott City, MD 21042.
You might want to bring water, a hat, and work gloves. Some volunteers will use saws. If you prefer not to, there will be plenty of work hauling brush.
