On Monday, January 16th, Montgomery County will celebrate the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. We will join with thousands of Americans across the country who will celebrate the national holiday honoring the life and work of Dr. King by doing service in their communities.
Montgomery County's main service event will take place again this year at the Bethesda North Marriott Conference Center. The event will include service projects from 12PM – 3PM. Service projects include the following family friendly activities:
- Packaging food with U.S. Hunger for community members in need
- Constructing fleece blankets with Montgomery Hospice for hospice patients
- Assembling "Snow Day" boxes with Meals on Wheels for homebound seniors
- Decorating an MLK mural with MCVC
- Decorating reusable bags with MC Office of Human Rights/Interfaith Works
- "Pretty Pouches" with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (Xi Sigma Omega and Theta Omega Omega)
You may not sign up for any particular project ahead of time.
Details:
- Check in starts at 11:30 AM and will take place on the upper level near the Grand Ballroom
- Please park at the White Flint Metro - parking is free on this Federal holiday. Use the walkway under Rockville Pike to get to the Marriott
- Students can pick up SSL forms at the MCVC/MCPS Table at the end of the event.
- This event will occur rain or shine (or snow!) unless a state of emergency is declared and we are asked to stay off of roads. Check this page for updates.

SSL hours are available. Students will receive 3 SSL hours for their time served.
Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian and must be completed outside of school hours. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns.
