2022 Heads Up, Phones Down Video Contest

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation’s Pedestrian Safety program is accepting submissions from all high school students attending Montgomery County public or private schools for the Heads Up, Phones Down video contest. Students are challenged to create a 30 second video PSA that raises awareness about the dangers of distracted driving and walking. Participants may use TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube, their phones film feature, or a range of other methods to create their submission and are encouraged to share their work on social media. Both individual and group submissions are allowed, but prizes will differ.
Who can enter: Any HIGH SCHOOL student enrolled in a Montgomery County public or private school can enter.
Students can enter the contest on their own or as a group; however, students may only participate in ONE entry. If a student in any way participates in more than one video, all of those entries will be disqualified
All quality submissions that meet ALL contest guidelines and appropriately visualize the Heads Up, Phones Down theme will receive 5 SSL hours. Students will be required to complete a reflection statement prior to uploading their contest video to receive credit for SSL. All hours will be submitted electronically by March 2022. MCPS students will NOT need to submit MCPS form 560-51.

Entry rules:
You can enter as an INDIVIDUAL or GROUP (up to 4 students from the same school).
- Submission can be a maximum of 30 seconds in length
- Groups cannot exceed 4 members, and all members must go to the same school
- Entries containing copyrighted music or sounds, profanity, or explicit images will be disqualified
- Each individual or group may only enter one submission and may not receive any professional assistance
- COVID-19 Safety: participants must abide by their local mandates regarding masks, social distancing, etc.
- Submissions in both English and Spanish will be accepted
- Students submitting group entries MUST attend the same school
Contest prizes:
- Grand Prize winner(s) will receive a Play Station 5 (individual) or $800 in amazon credit (split among group of up to 4 students)
- 1st Runner Up will receive an apple watch (individual) or $400 in amazon credit (group of up to 4 students)
- 2nd Runner Up will receive a JOBY GripTight Tripod Mount and GorillaPod 1k flexible mini (individual) or $200 in amazon credit (group of up to 4 students)
- People’s choice winner(s) will receive $100 per member in Nike gift cards
To Enter:
- Create your video, and make sure it follows all of the rules listed above.
- Upload your video to Google Drive, Dropbox, YouTube, or similar program.
- Enable the share option on Google Drive, Dropbox, YouTube, or similar program.
- Fill out and submit the online ONLINE CONTEST FORM, you will have to answer a few questions and provide a link to your video.
Submitted PSAs will be judged based on their creativity, insight, and overall ability to promote pedestrian and driving safety. Entries should also have decent production quality and appropriately depict the theme of Heads Up, Phones Down. All finalists will have their videos posted on the MCDOT website and social media, and community votes will determine the winner(s) of the people's choice prizes.

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety and privacy at any time the student is interacting with the nonprofit and its clients. The nonprofit organization will determine the number of SSL hours awarded based on the evidence submitted. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns. This service activity is designed to be completed within the safety of the student’s home until the end of the 2021-2022 school year.
